Membership of ICEARS is by invitation and open to academic staff and affiliates, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students of university departments who are actively involved in exercise science and medicine in the context of East African Running.

The founding membership have been drawn from University of Glasgow, Kenyatta University (Nairobi, Kenya) and Kotebe College (Adis Ababa, Ethiopia). Links with other university departments both nationally and internationally are currently being developed, and also with strategic organisations involved in the development and funding of athletics (e.g. IAAF, IOC, UK Athletics, UK Sport).
